Makeup Savvy needs to be Less Savvy!

Yes, you heard me right! Whether your a new or old reader you will know that my blog is based around affordable products both skincare and makeup. I write about this because that is what I love and it's what the bulk of my makeup collection is made up off and I truly believe the products I use aren't poorer quality than that of a more expensive brands.

However I do feel like I never really let myself indulge in brands such as Givenchy or YSL - however there is a reason for this.
I just haven't thought any product was worth the money!
I just can't see myself spending £25 on a foundation brush by MAC and thinking it was money well spent, nor could I justify spending £23 on an eyeshadow duo by Nars however pretty the shades were.

It's not even like I haven't purchased anything that would fall into the 'luxe' category. For years I re-purchased Touche Eclat by YSL (£22) however have now found I like a £8.50 concealer by No7 more. I have also gone through countless bottles of Thierry Mugler's Angel (£55) but love it as much as my £12 bottle of Covet by Sarah Jessica Parker.

I guess I have yet to find that luxurious product that I truly love.

All the above products are what I could class as luxurious, maybe not the Laura Mercier palette (bottom left) as the packaging isn't all that great.
If I am spending £35 + on a single product I want quality, beautiful packaging and if it's a makeup product I want something that can be used in multiple ways (I don't want alot, do I). I don't think I could ever spend over £20 on a single lipstick or eyeshadow, ever!

So as you can see I am abit of a scrooge - I really do want value for money and this is why I end up not buying anything. I just can't decide what would be worth it.

I am planning on purchasing the Urban Decay Naked Palette but at £27 for so many eyeshadows and then the two eyeliners and primer potion I don't even see this as a luxury purchase as it's such a great value for money product it is more of a need than want.

But I do want to treat myself more to quality makeup products and enjoying them!

So I need your help!
I know that alot of you love your high end makeup and I want to know what you love the most, or what you see as a really indulgent but worth it purchase.

  1. I love MAC products but I tend to only buy their lipsticks as I think Barry M shadows are a good alternative to MAC's pigments.

I also don't think you have to spend a bomb on makeup brushes, there are nice cheap alternatives out there.

  2. I think that you could indulge in some madina milano revolution items... they're amazing, a bit pricey but super-performing in my opninion. the packaging sucks a bit but I'm sure you will like them! ( only wait till you get my parcel!) :*

  3. I have to say the Guerlain Vendome palette is just amazing looking. When I swatched in store the shadows felt lovely. If you're going to indulge I'd do so here!

  4. is mac considered high end? i would say it was more an in-between price range. so i guess the product i spend the most on is foundation. however, this is because i have specific issues about my skin and i find i'm more pleased with the results when using higher end products (i use chanel vitalumiere and laura mercier mineral powder).

if i find a drugstore foundation that makes me happy, i'll be ALL OVER that! it's really a shame i haven't found one yet.

so yeah, high end foundation: totally worth the money!

  5. I splurge on YSL Foundations (just blogged about my favourite!) and NARS foundations too actually. Will also spend a lot on lipsticks and mascaras.

I rarely spend more than £10 on eyeshadows (MAC) usually spend less actually! And blushes I don't spend a lot on either!x

  6. Another great post!
Im kinda torn on this, if Mac is considered high end( which i class as highend) then i buy more than i really should, and yes i do gulp when handing over my card and pay £50 odd for 3 products. My obsessions with mac started when i came across youtube and blogs, i thought all these girls were beautiful and in my stupid mind thought if they use mac and are pretty,if i use it i will be.Completly stupid logic on my part i know and then i got caught up in the hype.
However, im equally as happy to use a "low end" foundation etc. I do like Mac lipsticks as i find them superior to most brands. I dont pay a lot of money for brushes as i would rahter buy a foundation or something for that price.x

  7. I splurge on Lancome skincare and mascara, and the odd Chanel lipstick or perfume, but other than that, I tend to stick to products that are more affordable! xx

  8. I love how you just justified the Naked palette as being a 'need'!!! I like how you think!!! Bobbi brown eyeshadows and blushes are so beautiful and amazing. The blushes especially are worth it I think!

  9. I am a repurchaser of Angel and YSL Touche Eclat like you said you were.

But other splurges are definetly NARS, Lancome, Chanel, Dior (for mascara!) and MAC.

God help me I'm only 20 - when I start working next year I'll be unstoppable in the beauty departments...

    xx

  10. I'm a bit of a scrooge too - but I absolutely love 'Coco Mademoiselle' perfume. It's my favourite, though at that price I have to make it last for a while.

I bought Urban Decay's Naked palette recently. It did cost more than I would normally spend but it's definitely worth the money! :)

  11. I really love my Dior Amber Diamond Shimmer Star :) I do buy high-end products quite often, but even Amber Diamond is an indulgence for me given the price tag. It is one of the most gorgeous, natural looking highlighters though, and I've heard that some people even use the individual colors as eyeshadows!

  12. I dont really go for MAC, maybe because in Australia if I paid a little more (sometimes just $10) I get a product that is a lot more luxurious, satisfying and something that I really love.

My favourite splurges of all time have been my Dior blush and Chanel Rouge Coco lipstick. I use them every day! My blush has lasted me 18 months and I love it more and more.

  13. My favourite (and only...) high end products are Chanel Inimitable Intense and Touche Eclat, which is why I am desperate to know which No7 concealer it is that you prefer? I need this in my life, haha :) xx

  14. 100% FOR SURE....THE CHANEL TAN DE SOLEIL CREAM BRONZER (I LOVE IT ENOUGH TO USE ALL CAPS!)
Seriously though, you will never go back to another bronzer after you use this. It was about $55 usd but it will last you over a year and I use mine every day.
    AMAZING!!!

  15. I love my LORAC Multiplex 3D Gloss the most.. I can't see myself without it!

I also need my UDPP and TFSI primers.

Other then that, I can't think of anything else I use daily that's really high end. I used to like YSL Faux Cils Mascara but I prefer Prestige My Biggest Lashes now.

  16. Scrooge for president!! I'm exactly like you!! The most expensive item I own is MAC Blot Powder and I've used it quite a lot (it's almost gone now), but haven't repurchased it, because I've found much cheaper things that I like almost equally! I would get the Naked Palette if I could though!! :)

  17. I love that your blog is 'savvy'- most blogs are just MAC MAC MAC... I really trust your opinions!
I'm the same as you, I just splurged on 2 Paul & Joe lipsticks which aren't the MOST expensive lipsticks around, but it took me like half a hour to decide on whether to spend the money or not!
Definately indulge in the Naked palette, you won't regret it, and I usually only splurge on perfume, in particular the Chanel ones- gorgeous!

  18. Another very thought provoking post. What I spend reflects my bank balance. As an indicator we are having some problems at a moment and I was discussing this with a friend and her response was "how bad is it? Are you having to use Nivea?"!! I have spent up to £34 on a foundation, have used Clarins, Dior and Chanel and have never found one to touch Max Factor Experience Weightless foundation, I am desperate to convert everyone I know to it as I think it is fantastic. Recently treated myself to a Chanel lip gloss in duty free only to find that I prefer my Rimmel Vinyl Gloss, can almost hardly believe it! That said I always find perfume worth paying for, was a long time Alien obsessive, currently loving all things Prada.

  19. Foundation definitely! Having the pink based MUFE Face and Body has been a revelation. I look so much healthier than the highstreet options. I did buy it off GossMakeup to try it though :)

  20. The one make-up item that I'm willing to spend a little more on is foundation, as a good base is so important. However, saying that if I found a good quality high-street one I would definately be a convert!
I've been umm-ing and ahh-ing over the UD NAked palette but you've convinced me to go for it!

  21. Don't think you are doing wrong, YOU are doing the best thing! Sometimes It's right to indulge in some luxury products to treat ourselves, but if there's a good alternative which is cheaper why wasting money on the more expensive one? ;-)
I think the Naked palette is a real bargain for 12 full size eyeshadows, a mini UDPP and a double glide on pencil, so I definitely recommend it! ;-)
    xx

  22. great post! i completely agree, i rarely spend a lot of money on make-up/skin care, because usually cheaper stuff is actually better value and quality!!!
but i hope you find something luxurious to treat yourself to soon!

  23. Great post! I think the products that I can most recommend as "very much worth a splurge" are my Rouge Bunny Rouge cosmetics. It's beautiful packaging, lovely colours but importantly, I feel the formulations are very, very good. These never disappoint me and are some of my most used items.

  24. I used to be very much a high street girl, but nowadays I often find myself justifying more high end products. Perfumes are definitely worth the splurge, especially around Xmas time as they often do gift sets which are great value. I also like to spend more on certain skin care products and make up products such concealers, powders and blushers x

  25. My favourite foundation is Revlon Colourstay and is just as good as MAC's Studio Fix but Colourstay costs £11.

  26. A few months back I bought Chanel Rouge Allure lipstick. It was a huge indulgence for me as it costs well over $30 here in Canada and I live on a student's budget. However, I can honestly say the formula is well worth it - it's lightweight and moisturizing yet nicely pigmented. Plus the shade I got - Romantic - is the most beautiful berry pink. I love it!
