10 Things You Should Know about Dry, Sensitive Skin (and how to control it)

AD - Sponsored Feature

Today I want to talk about dry, sensitive skin, as this is maybe one of the most challenging skin types to control. Both having their own unique needs and concerns that need addressing in order to have healthy, balanced skin.

With a little know-how and the right products on your side, you can care for your dry, sensitive skin, hence how this blog post came to be. Below you will find 10 things everyone with this skin type should know with little tips and tricks here and there.

1. To 'diagnose' dry, sensitive skin you first need to know the signs. The skin will often have a feeling of discomfort and tightness, accompanied by redness, itching and stinging.

2. The cause can be genetic or triggered by allergic reactions, health conditions, age, hormonal imbalance, winter weather, and certain skincare products and medications.

3. Surprising as this may be, this skin type is ultra-sensitive to water. You will want to bathe in warm water and keep showers as short as possible. Top Tip: Always pat skin dry (rather than rub). Also, try to get into a routine of applying hand cream every time you wash your hands.

Recommended product: I find all Jurlique Hand Creams nourish and rebalance dryness, with Jurlique Rose Hand Cream being my favourite due to the uplifting non-synthetic smelling rose scent and velvety texture.

4. As this skin type lacks natural oils it loses moisture easily. By using a rich, calming moisturiser and applying it while your skin is still damp you can protect it from further moisture loss thus helping the skin feel comfortable and soft.

Recommended product: If you are looking to hydrate, condition and soothe your skin, look no further than Jurlique Moisture Replenishing Day Cream, a moisturiser for dry and dehydrated skin that feels rich but soaks into the skin to leave it feeling perfectly hydrated. Alternatively, a wonderfully lightweight yet effective moisturiser for dry, dehydrated skin I've found to restore the skin's natural glow while also smoothing the appearance of fine lines is the wonderful Jurlique Moisture Plus Rare Rose Gel Cream or lotion - the rose scent is also incredibly lovely!

If you find your skin reddens easily and feels tight then Calendula Redness Rescue Soothing Moisturiser is the perfect moisturiser to help calm, cool and restore skin. Calendula (also known as Marigold) is known as “nature’s healer” helping to restore skin. Top tip: It is also amazing for skin burns including sun burn, skin grazes and cuts – the perfect cream to keep in your bathroom cabinet.

5. Dry air, especially in the winter months, exacerbates dryness and sensitivity. To combat this, consider investing in a humidifier that will bring moisture back to the air around you. Another way to combat dryness throughout the day that I find works really well is spritzing the face with Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist even over the top of makeup. It's a little burst of moisture and is perfect for when the skin is feeling tight and uncomfortable - also how stunning is the packaging!

6. For healthy, hydrated skin, keep your routine simple with only a few key products that are specially formulated for dryness and sensitivity. Sensitive skin care should always start with a cleanser that doesn't strip the skin, which is why I find Jurlique Radiant Skin Foaming Cleanser the perfect product to use in the morning. While it creates a nice lather along with the addition of Super-fone Pumice to gently exfoliate and boost radiance, it doesn't contain SLS's leaving the skin cleansed and protected. Then to seal in moisture and for long-lasting hydration, a few drops of Jurlique Activating Water Essence pressed over the face is the ideal product to use before other skincare. This concentrated yet ultra-light watery texture is ideal for all skin types and with the addition of Marshmallow Root it helps to hold water, leaving the complexion smoother, softer and healthy-looking all day. You can find many more products to create a simple routine on Jurlique's homepage

7. Try your best to avoid harsh ingredients that may irritate your skin, such as sulphates, high levels of alcohol and salicylic acid.

8. Skip active products (like retinol), as well as peels and microdermabrasion treatments. These will only redden and irritate the skin!

9. Hydrate your skin from the inside out with the food you eat from omega-3 fatty acids – found in oily fish, to avocado and even walnuts and flaxseed sprinkled over porridge in the morning.

10. Double-cleansing at night to remove any dirt and build-up is a must for all skin types but clogged pores can irritate and inflame your skin even more, so getting into a good routine is key. I swear by cleansing oil as it doesn't take moisturise away from the skin and gives a thorough cleanse, even removing waterproof mascara. Jurlique's Nourishing Cleansing Oil is one of the nicest I've tried feeling silky smooth while deep cleansing. It also benefits from Blackcurrant Seed Oil to help firm and smooth skin giving it a more youthful appearance.

Dry, sensitive skin is common. It can be uncomfortable, but these tips will hopefully help you keep it under control.
